The Perry Maroon Wrestlers opened their season last Thursday on the road, taking on Class 5A 6th ranked El Reno.

The Maroons won five individual matches but dropped the dual 45-25. The junior high wrestlers also competed, but fell 51-30.

The dual started at 190 lbs. and Maroons got off to a hot start winning the first three matches including two falls.

Junior Treg Bowman was the first one up and built an 8-0 lead before pinning Kolt Lafoe in 2:53. Senior Emmanuel Dolezal didn’t waste any time as he scored a quick takedown and pinned Ryan Siger in just 27 seconds.

Sophomore Cash Waren broke open a 1-1 tie with a 3rd period takedown to earn a tight 3-1 win over Gabriel Scrapper.

Hitting the strength of El Reno’s lineup, the young Maroons (three freshmen and five sophomores) fell behind 45-15.

Senior Ethan Hughes got the Maroons back on the winning track with a first period takedown and a fall in 1:12 over Jesse Hardy.

Returning state champion Kaleb Owen ended the night with a 10-1 major decision win over state placer Spencer Davidson.

Scoreless after the first period, Owen scored a 2nd period escape and takedown and then poured it on in the 3rd period with two takedowns and near fall points to take the 10-1 win.

In junior high action, Cameron Rose, Brand West, Tucker Vollmer, Andrew Kukuk and Aiden Tetik all won by fall with West getting the quickest fall, needing only 20 seconds to pin his opponent.

The Maroons are busy this week, taking on Class 6A 10th ranked Owasso on Thursday in the home opener and then hosting 16 other schools in the 46th Annual Perry Tournament of Champions on Friday and Saturday.
